Condensation of water vapour occurs in the inside layers of the plastics film surface of the packaging when fresh produce and processed foods packed in them are subjected to temperature fluctuations for eg. during storage in freezers in grocery stores and shopping malls. Water vapour condenses as tiny droplets which scatter light and increase opacity and thus hamper the visibility of clear plastics surfaces which reduces aesthetics value and shelf appeal. Further water droplets percolating on foods can accelerate spoilage.

Similarly, steam from foods that are cooked or filled hot condense on the cooler upper layer affecting the visibility of the packaged food.

Challenges
  • Problem: In Agricultural greenhouse films and tunnel films, condensed water droplets reduce light transmission reaching the plants thereby slowing their growth and reducing productivity. Further, these water droplets create a “lensing effect” and scatter light which can damage plants and create brown spots.
  • Solution: Antifog masterbatches contain actives that are usually migratory in nature and reduce surface tension between plastics surface and water molecules. This results in water vapour condensing as a continuous, transparent layer of water instead of scattered tiny droplets and thus transparency and visibility of packaged products is not affected and products do not lose appeal and aesthetics. Further, they prevent loss of productivity in agricultural produce and their damage from scattered light from “tiny lenses”.
Advantages
  • Our Antifog masterbatches provide the optimum functional performance of sealability, printability and laminating properties to the films and may be combined with a suitable antiblock additive if desired.
